"¡Printing the Revolution!" at the Hood Museum

"¡Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now" is open at the Hood Museum in Hanover, NH until June 17, 2023. The exhibition showcases the powerful legacy of Chicano printmaking which emerged during the civil rights, labor, anti-war, feminist, and LGBTQ+ movements of the 1960s. Through their art, Chicanx artists not only called for social change but also challenged and reshaped ideas of Chicanx identity. This exhibition is the first to unite historic prints from the civil rights era with works by contemporary artists who use a wide range of techniques, from screen-printing to augmented reality. Featured artists & collectives include Rupert García, Malaquias Montoya, Ester Hernandez, Rene Castro, the Royal Chicano Air Force, among others. Organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum Carmen Ramos and Claudia Zapata , this exhibition explores the enduring and inventive graphic tradition of Chicano printmaking that has yet to be fully integrated into the history of U.S. printmaking.
